Richie Rich

Richard Serrell, professionally known as Richie Rich, is an Oakland-born rapper whose laid-back delivery, storytelling style, and unmistakably Bay Area perspective helped shape the sound of West Coast hip-hop long before the region became a dominant force in mainstream rap.

Born in Oakland in 1967, Rich began recording in the late 1980s and emerged as a member of the Oakland group 415, alongside D-Loc, DJ Daryl, and J.E.D. The group took its name from the Bay Area telephone code that served Oakland at the time and became an important part of the city’s early rap movement.

415’s debut album, 41Fivin, became a regional favorite and helped establish Rich as one of Oakland’s distinctive new voices. His delivery was smooth and controlled rather than frantic, built around conversational storytelling and detailed pictures of everyday life in the city.

That style ultimately reached far beyond Oakland. Snoop Dogg has discussed the influence of 415, explaining that he, Warren G, and Nate Dogg named their group 213 after seeing how Richie Rich and 415 represented their own area code. Warren G has also identified 415 as one of the groups that influenced 213.

Rich began establishing himself as a solo artist at the same time. His first solo album, Don’t Do It, arrived in 1990. After his time with 415, he continued building his career independently, releasing Half Thang and developing his own Oakland-based operation before attracting attention from major labels.

In the mid-1990s, Richie Rich signed with Def Jam Records. That move led to one of the defining records of his career: Seasoned Veteran, released in November 1996.

The album reached No. 35 on the Billboard 200 and No. 11 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart. Its best-known singles included “Let’s Ride”, which reached the Top 10 of Billboard’s rap chart, and “Do G’s Get to Go to Heaven?”

The project also connected Richie Rich with other major voices from the West Coast, including fellow Bay Area artist E-40 and Tupac Shakur.

Richie Rich’s connection with Tupac Shakur became another important part of his musical history. Rich appeared alongside 2Pac on “Heavy in the Game” from the landmark 1995 album Me Against the World, while Tupac later appeared on Richie Rich’s Seasoned Veteran.

Their work together connected two artists with deep ties to Northern California during a pivotal period in West Coast rap.

Over the course of his career, Rich has worked with artists across multiple generations of hip-hop. His own artist biography cites collaborations with names including 2Pac, Snoop Dogg, Too $hort, T-Boz, Mozzy, and Rick James.

His music has remained rooted in the qualities that established him in the first place: a relaxed vocal presence, meticulous flow, and an emphasis on storytelling drawn from his experience in Oakland and inner-city life.

The fact that one of Southern California’s most recognizable groups, 213, was directly inspired by Oakland’s 415 is a particularly clear example of how far that influence traveled.

Rich has also continued releasing music on his own terms. His independent catalog includes projects such as The Game, The Grow Room, and the more recent Richard.

Released through TenSix Records, Richard brings him together with another cross-generational group of artists, including E-40, Larry June, Curren$y, Jane Handcock, Young Jr., and V White. The project shows an artist still connected to the Bay Area while working alongside musicians whose careers span several different eras of rap.

His work today extends beyond recording as well. In a 2026 appearance on All The Smoke, Rich reflected on his Oakland upbringing, the formation and influence of 415, his relationship with Tupac, the choices he made around fame and the music business, and his current entrepreneurial work, including The Rolling Bean Coffee.

More than three decades after 415 first put its name on Oakland hip-hop, Richie Rich remains closely identified with the city and the culture that produced him. His career bridges the independent Bay Area rap scene of the late 1980s, the major-label West Coast explosion of the 1990s, and a newer generation of artists carrying Northern California music forward.
